WHAT IS CBD?
Surely by now you’ve heard of CBD, as it’s popularity continues to spread like wildfire. CBD is short for Cannabidiol, and it is one of the many chemical components that epitomizes the Cannabis plant genus. Unlike its plant relative, Marijuana, CBD is non-psychoactive and does not result in a ‘high’. And this differentiation between Marijuana and hemp-derived CBD is the very reason that it is rising to prevalence and becoming more socially sanctioned. It contains all of the benefits that medicinal cannabis contains, yet is extremely low-risk, with none of the negative side effects like increased paranoia, decreased motor responses, or appetite irregularity.
HOW DOES CBD WORK?
The mystery of why CBD works so well in mammalian bodies, comes down to the Endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system works somewhat like a conductor in a symphony, overseeing many of the most complex physiological systems in our bodies. By playing the role of regulator, the ECS promotes homeostasis and essentially levels us out, thereby positively contributing to both physical and mental well-being.
IS CBD SAFE?
Indeed. In a recent report The World Health Organization (WHO) officially deemed CBD,“ safe and well tolerated in humans (and animals)", and the only situation we could imagine CBD being unsafe for horses is if it is purchased from a non-reputable supplier. The potential of purchasing a CBD product without proper testing or verification of purity risks the possibility of exposing your horse to unsafe chemicals. As aforementioned, do your due diligence in selecting the right CBD for your horse.
WHAT DOES RESEARCH SAY?
Researchers at Kentucky Equine Research (KER) are closely studying CBD and its effect on horses. Horse expert & nutritionist, Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D explains, “Hemp is hardy and fast-growing, and can be harvested for industrial and commercial products such as rope, clothes, paper, textiles, plastics, and biofuel. For horses, the two primary uses of hemp include bedding and oil obtained from hemp seeds. Hemp oil contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which are known for their health benefits. The nervous system of both mature and immature horses also benefits from Omega-3’s, as supplementation decreases stress, improves learning and cognition, and staves off the development of stereotypic behaviors, such as cribbing.”
WHAT TYPES OF ANIMALS BENEFIT FROM CBD?
All mammals have an endocannabinoid system, the body’s large network of receptors that CBD works directly with. Therefore, CBD can be beneficial for a wide array of animals, from household pets to horses, and more: cats, dogs, rabbits, cows, sheep, goats, and pigs.
WHY SHOULD I ADD CBD TO MY PETS WELLNESS ROUTINE?
As the stigma surrounding hemp-derived CBD continues to lessen, there’s no reason not to try CBD for your pet. However, we understand why some are still skeptical, because in many ways CBD sounds too good to be true. So, to put your mind at ease, here’s why you’d be making the right choice.
Reputable health organizations all over the world including the World Health Organization (WHO) have deemed CBD a ‘safe & effective’ health alternative for both humans and animals.
Though CBD research for pets is in its infancy, recent studies are showing promising results. Cornell’s recent double-blind clinical study sought to determine the safety and efficacy of CBD for improving the comfort of dogs suffering from osteoarthritis. The results positively favored CBD as an effective health alternative.
Unlike typical prescriptions used to help pets with pain or other ailments, CBD is 100% natural and grown by Mother nature
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CBD FOR PETS?
CBD is home to a whole host of benefits for pets. Products containing CBD have become widely popularized to help pets through visits to the vet, long car rides, the groomer, or simply old age. Through supporting long-term health, animals both young and old can reap the benefits of CBD.
HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT CBD FOR MY PET?
As the CBD market grows, it’s important to be especially careful when buying a CBD product, as some companies use lab-grown hemp extracts rather than sun & soil grown CBD. Here’s what to look for when choosing CBD pet treats:
- The term, ‘human-grade’, signifying ingredients are up to par with human standards
- Lab reports available verifying CBD content
- A customer service team to answer your inquiries and help with concerns.
- Information on the hemp used in the product: broad spectrum, full-spectrum or isolate, etc.
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION FOR HORSES AND PETS?
NaturwellCBD features human-grade CBD pet products in the forms of oils, treats, and pellets (designed for horses). We trust that you know your canine or steed better than anyone, so choose the technique that best fits your pet.
Determining how much CBD to give your pet will take a bit of finessing. When you first begin giving CBD to your pet, be sure to watch how they respond to the CBD closely and adjust accordingly in order to find the right dose for them.
Please see our CBD dosage and administration pages for help:
ARE THERE BENEFITS OF LONG TERM DOSAGE?
Yes. We receive a lot of feedback that owners notice the effects of CBD immediately, sometimes within an hour of their first administration. But if this isn’t the case, it could take between 3-7 days to notice positive effects. After your pet has adapted to CBD, slowly increase the dose until you observe the desired results.
Most importantly, maintain consistency. The benefits of a fully functioning endocannabinoid system aren’t experienced right away. Over time, consistent supplementation will stimulate your pet’s endocannabinoid receptors, which will promote the mental and physical health of your pet on a consistent basis.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR CBD TO WORK?
There are a myriad of different factors that will determine how long it takes for CBD to work for your pet, including: age, weight, activity level, and so on. Also, some animals have a more sensitive system that will cause a stronger reaction to CBD. This is why it is always wise to start out with the lowest recommended dose of CBD possible and slowly work your way up, while always monitoring your pet’s behavior until you find the perfect dose.
WILL CBD GET MY PET 'HIGH'?
Absolutely not! NaturwellCBD oil and treats do not contain the chemical THC, which results in a ‘high’ feeling. However, CBD effects each animal differently. CBD can make older dogs or cats act more energetic and anxious or higher energy pets feel calm. Hemp has a unique ability to calm the central nervous system, resulting in an internal balance that provides your pet with peace of mind and simple bliss.
COULD MY PET OVERDOSE ON CBD?
No, your pet overdosing on CBD is extremely unlikely. At worst, a high dosage of CBD will cause your pet to become very sleepy.
IF MY PET IS ALREADY TAKING MEDICINE, CAN THEY TAKE CBD?
They could, but we would recommend speaking with your veterinarian before adding CBD to your pet’s wellness regimen.
